Sports Therapy Services

What is Sports Therapy?

Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability1..

It utilises the principles of sport and exercise sciences incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training, competition and where applicable, work2..

Is Sports Therapy Professionally Regulated?

In May 2006 it was formally agreed by the Health Professions Council (HPC) ‘to recommend to the Secretary of State that, in the interests of public protection, Sports Therapists should be regulated’4.. This means that the title of ‘Sports Therapist’ will become one which is protected by law and only those who have undertaken and passed a recognised and approved course of study and abide by the rules and regulations set by the HPC may use this title. First and foremost, this is in the interests of protecting the public and to reassure those seeking treatment and advice for sports and occupational related injuries that they will receive an appropriate and high standard of care. Although at present the bill for the regulation of Sports Therapist is still to be passed, the work towards this is at an advanced stage and is due to be concluded in the near future.
